OK...full disclosure:
This is my first foray into any sort of online forum. My stamp collecting has typically been with Me, Myself and I. While the philatelic company I keep has been pretty great ( ) I thought it was time to branch out a bit and see what it was like. I chose this forum in particular at the suggestion of Chris Loves Stamps--with whom I have swapped a few emails. I was also encouraged by the forum rules being about kindness towards each other. When I attended a stamp show, I felt out of place. Besides not knowing anyone, it felt like my paltry budget and lack of lingo pegged me as an outsider.
As many of you, I began collecting stamps as a child, pestering anyone and everyone I knew for their postage stamps--I didn't really care where they were from. A few years ago, I began again to collect more in earnest and have been having a lot of fun. FUN is the operative word for me when it comes to philately. The interesting development for 51 year old Me versus 10 year old Me is that I have discovered what I actually like. In 2021, I also started into Postcrossing, which has been a fun way to connect with people in a positive, uplifting way and has probably influenced my interest into postal history.
So here's what I like:
- Pre-1950's, particularly definitives
- Stamps with significant connection to my family history: For example, I began collecting definitives of Tsarist Russia because my grandparents were born in Ukraine prior to the Communist Revolution.
- Beautiful stamps--which more often than not are the product of intaglio printing.
- Stamps that intersect with other interests like, football (soccer), Star Trek, and certain birds.
- Postal History - I have been picking up postcards with local historical significance, as well as seeking out cancellations for specific dates and years relating to family birthdays. I have also been intrigued by the stories of random people, occasionally picking up covers that still contain the original letter inside.
So...maybe this all qualifies as 'oversharing' but it gives you a glimpse of what interests me the most.
Thanks for reading!
