I have often run across stamps such as shown with one edge with uniform short perfs. The edges are smooth as if having been mechanically trimmed. Is it from a mis-trimmed sheet created during production?

Production issue caused by the guillotine. On this particular issue, there is no wide gutter in one direction, so the cut has to be made at the perforations and there is no selvedge there. This is a format characteristic of several of the Huck Press printings. You will see it on the 1969 Christmas stamp and the later 1970 printing of the 6¢ Flag over White House definitives. The Huck Press had the marginal markings running along the sides of the roll, but not necessarily in the same spot for each successive pane. That is why plate blocks of those issues are collected as complete side strip pairs (e.g., plate blocks of 10, plate blocks of 20...).

Thanks, k. Somehow I knew you’d have the answer.
