I was telling a friend about my philatelic proclivities. He asked, “Isn’t that an expensive hobby?” “It can be.” I responded, “but I think I have spent more on the philatelic paraphernalia than on the stamps themselves.
So naturally, I try to look for ways to save where I can. It doesn’t hurt to ask at stamp shows and shops if dealers have used Vario pages or even stock books. At a local stamp & coin shop — now few and far between — I discovered a pile of experienced (gently used) Vario pages of differing pockets. The store owner was selling the pages for 50 cents each. So I bought as many as I could afford. I’ve done this three times now and I think the store owner recognizes me because I’m the guy who neatly organize them.

I'm a big fan of Vario stockpages (and similar quality competing brands). I have several thousand, very roughly half of which were purchased used. As with cars, the cost of used Varios has really skyrocketed in the past 5 years, to the point where used ones can cost more than the brand new ones I purchased a decade ago! So I've gone back to buying brand new ones in bulk. The new ones in bulk have also increased noticeably. I used to be able to get new ones a little over 50c each, but not any more. Now it's closer to 70c each. But the cost of used ones has gone up 2x-5x!!!

Unlike many stamp items, Varios are an investment since they can be repurposed many times. I have not had much luck with Hagners.

Hagners are nice for sorting as stamps can be quickly removed/inserted. But the strips are too easily snagged or sometimes slowly come off the cardstock. Also, too expensive new. The only Hagners that I have all came from purchases of stamp lots -- I was going for the stamps, and the collector had used Hagners to hold the stamps. I doubt I have more than 25 Hagners that are still fully intact.

I have the same feelings about Hagner. I prefer them for scanning, but the strips just don't hold up over time.
