Interesting story about why Italy did not issue a stamp at the time they conquered K2. The Italian expedition had a very strict hierarchy and duties assigned to members. Walter Bonatti was assigned the task of carrying O2 cylinders up to the 2 men, Lino Lacedelli and Achille Campagnoni, who eventually did reach the summit. Lacedelli and Campagnoni accused Bonatti of dereliction of duty and of attempting organizing his own attempt to reach the summit. Bonatti accused those two of pitching their tents so close to the top that he and his porter almost died trying to deliver the O2. The Italian climbing community split into opposing factions over the incident, and it got so bad that the stamp which Italy had already produced through the proofs stage, and scheduled for a 1955 release, was canceled. (Stamp Collector magazine, Nov. 2020) 1954 Proof of unissued K2 stamp from Italy Pakistan cheerfully filled the void. Pakistan, Scott Nr 65 (1954)
