France started producing stamps for use in the Ottoman in 1885. France began postal operations there in 1812. Can anyone tell me when (if ever) and which (if any) French stamps were used before 1885 (i.e. forerunners)?

Ted. I found a page in the 2018 Maury which addresses this: Bureaux Francais a l'Etranger (French Foreign Offices).
Beginning in the 1850s, French foreign offices began using the current Louis Napoleon III stamps and the points with number cancellations. The number denoted the office location in either France or other countries. The Maury list gives the office numbers for the foreign offices along with values for the stamps, either used singles or on cover. Constantinople was 3707, Gallipoli was 3767, etc. I tried to send a photo but See My Stamps will not permit photos of non-philatelic or copyrighted material.

I tried to send a photo but See My Stamps will not permit photos of non-philatelic or copyrighted material. Phil is the admin/owner of SMS. I am an "invisible" admin to help things along. Snippets are OK, as this falls under the Education fair use clause. What we don't want is people uploading copyrighted pictures/artwork without the creator or copyright owner's permission, or a significant reproduction of a copyrighted catalog/periodical/article... We consider stamp catalogs to be "philatelic"; the pic does not necessarily have to be picture of a stamp. However, we prefer that you set non-stamp pictures to "private" so that they don't show up on the public gallery. Album pages that contain stamps are OK. Any product that contains a picture of a stamp is OK... Unfortunately, Dr Pepper is not considered philatelic, despite the fact that it was an important part of my philatelic activities. I consider putting up a fight about this, but Phil is one of the good guys, so I let it slide. Maybe if I slap some Liberty Bell stamps on the Dr Pepper pics, I guess technically it could qualify...
