Today is the anniversary of the death of Danish composer Niels Gade. While Denmark has never seen fit to honor this day, his birthday, or any other day of his life, they did feel that his fellow Dane with the shared surname was. Jacob Gade was a dance hall musician and composer of silent film accompanying music. He had no formal training, but that did not prevent him from becoming the leader of the Palads Cinema orchestra in Copenhagen. For the sequel to Douglas Fairbanks Jr's "Mark of Zorro," "Don Q, Son of Zorro," he wrote a score from which sprang the only piece of music for which he is remembered today, "Jalousie." Denmark, Scott Nr 660 (1979)

On this day in 1808, concert goers were treated to a Ludwigpalooza -- the premiers of not one, not two, not three, but, count 'em, FOUR new pieces by Beethoven: The 5th Symphony, The 6th Symphony, the Choral Fantasy, and the 4th Piano Concerto, with LvB himself tickling the ivories. Argentina, Scott Nr 2907 (2020)
