Well I have a mountain of Washington / Franklins to sort and identify. Yeah though I walk into this philatelic valley, my jiffy is at my side to aid and comfort me. haha!

That's a cool find! Is it really accurate?

So the identifier has been close enough for my humble needs. But sheesh - I’m not sure what to do with all the duplicates. Oh well, it will be a while until I get to the point that I’m ready to sell, donate or trade those. The EBay auctions are keeping me really busy. I’ve had this identifier for decades - I can’t remember how or when I acquired it.

Assuming there are no alterations, the Jiffy guide can help you with the ID. But I don't see a bureau gauge associated with it, and the 2c and 3c identifiers are missing, which for those issues is often so crucial. Philatelia, if you send an email to scottvpayton@hotmail.com I can send you the "modern" version of this which takes into account all of the shades, private perforations, type identifiers for all of the 2c and 3c varieties as well as paper, press and watermark identifiers. I can also send you a copy of "Taming the Beast" which has detail around all these issues. Cheers, -S

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention, in order to use the FW Matrix, you do have to have access to Microsoft Excel, as it is a tool built entirely in Excel.

Angore, Actually the stampsmarter FW ID matrix is the work of mine and Bill Weiss. That was version 9 from about a decade ago, Don just turned the spreadsheet into a web page. The current version is 38 and has added a huge amount of information since then, as well as fixing some things that were also wrong from the early versions. So yes, you can use that, but it's really not very complete. They do have ID's for other issues as well, which were not part of my work or Bill's work.

This is a very helpful matrix. Well worth the download. Thank you for doing this!

And still adding/improving it. I have plans for at least 3 additional elements for this, but I'm just trying to find the time to do it. In particular ID for the Shanghai Overprints (and detecting their fraudulent applied overprint), and also ID for booklet panes and their booklest (BK999). This being a VERY tricky ID as well. I see so many misID'd booklets with the FW panes. Hopefully both added by the end of the year.

I have one of those laying around somewhere. I picked it up in the early 70s along with my brand new Harris US album. Used it a lot in the early days but haven't done much with it lately. Any of the stamps that show up I just put aside till I get enough to spend some time on them. Still haven't found any of the rare /scarce ones. I used to get lots of them in box lots and it was always fun going through them.

Well one thing I can mention that is not in the Jiffy guide, and only recognized recently by Scott are the ribbed paper and laid paper varieties. It's useful to know which Scott #'s the exist on, so that when you encounter what might otherwise be a "common" stamp, could actually be a scarce one. The Jiffy Guide also doesn't show how to identify bluish paper variety. So it is incomplete from the perspective of more of the scarce varieties. While the bluish paper Scott #'s are on the guide, it is only helpful if you can identify the specific paper type. Anyone interested in the FW Matrix, just email me and I'll send it across. Cheers! -S
