Howdy everyone - I think I know almost everyone here from other forums and what an awesome group! And, conversely, most of you know me - I’m the one with lots of wacky, just wanna have fun ideas with a bit of hot pepper thrown in once in a while. I’m a retired journeyman industrial electrician who spent the better part of three decades trying to keep massive stamping plant machinery running. I got to play with everything from cranes 50 feet overhead, Intricate Robots, Welders drawing so much current that the cables jumped to ginormous 500 HP motors. Cool beans, eh?
I can’t imagine my retirement without my stamps. I have other hobbies - biking, cooking, embroidery, reading, playing with my schnauzer boys, etc but stamps are my obsession. I have a naughty habit of buying collections then trying like hell to get rid of the duplicates selling for peanuts or just giving them away. I don’t care about prices I just don’t like clutter or dusting the dadgum clutter. I don’t like selling either, but what are ya gonna do, eh? My collections are getting too advanced for trading to be productive although sometimes I trade for bulk lots of a series I plan to flyspeck.
My collecting interests have narrowed greatly in the past 50 years. I now collect about a dozen countries (still too much!) including Ireland, Austria, USA used singles, Bermuda, Venezuela, Vatican, used Japan and Scandinavia. When I cut back, I kept my favorite country from several large Geographic areas thus explaining the seemingly random diversity. I have dual collections - a mint and a used except for Japan and USA where I only collect postally used singles. I don’t have cut-off dates, but I don’t make a great effort to obtain newer issues. If I buy a collection that ended in 2014, then I will add a few of the next missing issues to my want list, but anything after that isn’t a priority. Why? Because new issues are hugely overpriced and I’ve found that if I wait 10 years, I’ll be able to buy them in a collection for maybe 10% of catalog. I am now trying to add more interest to my collections by searching for varieties and classic covers.
I would like to thank Ted for inviting me to join this forum. He assures me that politics, religion and rude behavior are absolutely verboten. Yay Ted! Sadly, too often people say things in forums that they would never say when talking face to face and philately seems to bring out this nasty competitiveness to show who knows the most similar to bragging about who has the fastest car, the fattest wallet or the biggest whatever. I’ve also encountered “mansplaining” and a general “talking down to” problem with men when talking to women like myself. But much of that old time attitude that women only collect pretty flowers and butterflies on stamps is slowly and literally dying off and the younger philatelists are much more egalitarian towards us gals which after 50 years is such a relief. And the attitude that everyone should collect what they want however they want is encouraged and defended and isn’t that wonderful! So thank you, Ted, for providing a forum that is pleasant and welcoming to everyone and that doesn’t have any bridges for the trolls.
Happy stamping everyone!
