A fun fact I saw on the dissectingphilately Instagram feed. The USPS Priority Mail small flat-rate box costs $8.55 to mail anything you can fit into the box, with a maximum weight limit of 70 pounds. It’s safe to say that even if you were to use an industrial strength compactor to fit as many stamps into it as you could, you would not reach this weight limit. In fact, no matter what you fill it with, you will never reach that weight limit. The densest (heaviest) naturally occurring element is osmium, which weighs 22.5 grams per cubic cm. If you could fill up all the space inside the box with osmium, it would still weigh only 64.5 pounds. I hope the USPS never realizes this; they will surely lower the weight limit to 60 pounds, just to foil those budget-minded osmium shippers.

I used to use those smallest priority mail boxes to mail out VHS cassettes (remember when priority mail was less than $3?). Would I be allowed to mail out this DVD in there?

My wife might posit that the densest material on earth is my head. But that's a topic for another thread...

In a past life I made a living painting toy soldiers for wargaming. Don't laugh, it's not a thing that many can do well, and I was damn good. But these boxes, the VHS sized boxes were perfect for storing and shipping painted figures, with a lot of tissue packing.

Ooo, so we're back to being able to mail a child in the post again!? Awesome. Just have to "Flat Stanley" them to get them in there.
