Anyway, as you can tell by my being able to make scans, I have a computer again. Unfortunately, you who provided advice might be disappointed that I ignored it all. Because of the difficulty in even getting my wife to green-light the purchase, I had to go with the most processing power for the buck. Lenovo had a sale on IdeaPad 5 with a Ryzen 7 7730U and 512Gb I couldn’t resist. So, shoot me. LOL

My 2011 Lenovo still serves as my emergency backup laptop! I had to bring it along with my MSI last road trip because my MSI wifi adapter started failing and I couldn't connect to the hotel wifi unless I went to the lobby and hardwired the ethernet cable to my MSI. A very understanding overnight manager let me disconnect their business center desktop so I could use my MSI laptop with that ethernet cable! Turns out the manager came back soon after because he noticed my MSI -- he's a gamer. We ended up chatting an hour about the MSI. Even though I don't use my MSI for online gaming since I'm not into online gaming, he understand why I kept using my MSI even after various components started failing in the past 3 years. Well, I bit the bullet and finally bought a replacement laptop -- it's coming in this evening. After a lot of internet and soul searching, I ended up buying... ...another MSI!!! It was $300 more expensive than my original first choice (Acer). I was planning on upgrading the Acer myself (Acer's are pretty easy to upgrade). But factoring in the cost of the upgrade components, I found out I was only saving $50, and the MSI still had the better video card. So I ended up getting another MSI. 32GB memory, 1TB SSD and also 1TB HDD (that turned out to be free, I prefer minimum 2TB drive capacity), RTX 3050 (I really don't need higher since not actually gaming). I got it for $1 under my maximum budget. I forgot that this wasn't going to be a tax exempt purchase, so I actually went over budget when including tax. Oh well. Ironically, there was a 17.3" with similar/better specs at equivalent or better price. But the 17.3" laptops don't fit in my business case -- it has to be a 15.6" laptop. Crazy. (but happy) It better not be DOA. k

You'd be surprised by how much money you can save by drinking instead of Coke.

Yeah, my wife seemed a little too eager to have me buy a new laptop (it's been in planning since last summer). I'm just going to set aside my paranoia and assume that she's just buttering me up to hit me with her next big purchase.

I have 2 Lenovo laptops with me right now. One is my insane portable workstation that has a 6 core Xeon in it, and 12TB of M.2 storage, 128gb memory and dual video cards. 15" 4k monitor, a little on the heavy side, but still has the "swappable battery" option, of which I have 3. This monster was just under $5k 3 years ago. I use it when I'm traveling but mostly stationary once I arrive (hence, portable workstation) and I also use it for CFD modeling.
The other one is a brand new X1 Carbon that is replacing my Dell XPS 13 as my "laptop for short trips" like going to sites or clients. It has the new dual-processor P-Core and E-Core combination for 20 a total of 20 cores. It's 32gb memory, a 4TB M.2 SSD but is really light weight. I like it.
I have an old X40 that I have used since 2005. It only has a 40GB drive on it, and runs Windows XP 32-bit, but you know, that thing just has gone and gone and gone.
I used to work for Dell, and I do love their XPS-13 for a compact rugged box. But I've become pretty satisfied with the ThinkPad's again. Killer boxes.

Ted, your 512GB storage is what I have in Memory on my primary workstation back in Tokyo. >< That Beast (or The Perfect Beast) or TPB as we call it, has 80TB storage on it. If I ever figure out how to post an image here, I'll put one up of it.

Don't why you were thinking k-money. You're talking pennies there as the primary monetary unit!

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad P15 (10th Gen Intel) and have been a Thinkpad user for many many years. I liked the keyboards. I also purchased a docking station that allows attachments of 3 displays and lots of USB ports I use a Dell for work and can utilize the docking station at home since both use USB-C connection (power, display, usb).
By an oversight I was upgraded to Win 11. The biggest issues was I cannot move the task bar like win 10. There was not much shock Microsoft trying to change my dwfault browser, etc. I am no fan of widgets, etc. and other distractions they try to push.

Yeah, I just rolled back my Win11 to Win10 on my new laptop. I was planning on doing that anyway because I didn't want to deal with compatibility issues on legacy peripherals. But I also noticed what you stated in your last paragraph, and those alone would made me go back to Win10. I like having my Taskbar on the right side (I value vertical real estate on my screen, since I almost never have to do horizontal scrolling but do a lot of vertical scrolling). Win11 apparently does not give you the option to move the Taskbar to the right edge.
You can't remove Edge at all now. I've learned to live with it trying to conspire with Bing to take over things in background. When Win10 first came out, you could remove Edge. After 1-2 years, I noticed my Win10 updates would take 30-60min instead of 5 minutes. They would reinstall Edge each time. If I removed Edge, they would again reinstall it. After I left Edge installed, back to the simple/quick 5 minute updates.
All those widgets and live tiles, and the way Edge just opens up to pop-ups and a home screen that has all sorts of running animations/videos/slideshows -- I have no doubt I'll end up having a seizure if I ever am forced to use Win11 long-term. I know I can turn off all that stuff, but there's no way to turn it off globally -- apparently I have to sit there toggling every single widget and every single silly "option" in Edge to get rid a lot of those flashes/bells/whistles.

Yes they seemed to have locked the task bar but apparently there is a vendor utility to move it. I like it at the top since my eyes are usually just above mid screen. It did interfere with a few applications. I have not seen any compatibility issues yet. 16x9 may be good for movies but for computer work a better ratio is preferred.
It did not take much effort to get back to my original custom desktop. I do not use Edge except for some at work but know Windows wants Edge to display Windows features like help, etc. Edge has been just annoying, intrusive. and insulting although the latest update makes it very easy to get to a simple blank page with google search bar (not bing).
I will stay with win 11 until I reach my limit of BS.
